Open Daily until 24th November
At: Oakham Castle, Church Passage, Market Place, OAKHAM, Rutland, LE15 6DR
About: Come and witness the display of community made poppies on the grounds of Oakham Caslte, until 24th November. This is a community art work event to
commemorate the centenary of the end of The Great War. This commemoration is one of the most important of its kind in the area for many generations. Underpinning the Project are stories and recollections of this terrible conflict and, even more important, the hope that these appalling events must never happen again. For this to be a realistic hope we want the younger generation, upon whom our future peace will depend, to be involved and to understand the causes and lessons of The Great War. The Poppies will be available to buy from the Castle, Museum and Library from 24th Nov 2018 for a suggested donation of £2 per poppy. We have produced a commemorative booklet about the project which can be purchased at a donation cost of £5.00 (which also includes one of the ceramic poppies). Proceeds will go to The Royal British Legion.

Crossings

Time: 7:30pm
Price: £10
About: New Perspectives and Pentabus Theatre Companies are among the most experienced in rural touring in the UK and many of our long-standing venues will have promoted their shows year on year. Both companies can be relied upon for slick and well-thought out productions which bring a 'big' theatre experience to the heart of your community. For the first time ever they are collaborating in a joint theatre production, with live music, and specially commissioned from an Edinburgh Fringe First winning playwright Deirdre Kinahan, to mark the centenary of the end of World War 1. Centring around the village hall, this new play has that building and its community at its heart. The village hall in this story has been built in memoriam and is the focal point of two connecting stories, 100 years apart. The village hall. September 1919. This is Margaret’s domain and the last place she expected to come face to face with her brother’s lover. Michael has returned from the Great War to perform as a female impersonator in music halls, in part reinventing himself to accept the death of his soulmate, lost on the front line. Through a chance meeting their two lives collide resulting in unlikely pairing that will change the course of the future. Fast forward. The village hall. September 2019. Seán is curious. This seems like a good place to bring a group of young refugees to get a taste of rural life. He steps inside to find Mirjana setting up for an exercise class. She left Bosnia to make a new life for herself here. Almost a century after Seán’s grandparents had met in the very same village hall, will history repeat itself and this chance encounter bring their different worlds together?
Tickets are £10.00 from Oakham Wines or wegottickets.com

Rutland farmers proudly showed off the best of their stock with the aim of encouraging people to buy British and support the industry. Taking place on Wednesday morning on Uppingham Market Place, there will be pens full of livestock arriving at 7am, judging comences at 10am and the prize-giving will be at 11.30am. Cancelled only by war and the two national out-breaks of the foot and mouth epidemic this is a unique show being the only event of its kind in the UK still held in temporary penning in a town market square. The regular weekly fatstock market finished in 1954, with the ending of wartime controls, but the annual Fatstock Show has continued and remains one of the most prestigious events in the town's calendar and is without a doubt "a jewel in Rutland's crown".
