Poppy Workshop: Rutland Poppy Project

Wednesday 9th May
At: Bisbrooke Hall, LE15 9BS
Time: 2:00pm
About: The Rutland Poppy project was the result of a Schools Engagement meeting in early October 2017. As the Chairman of the World War 1 as appointed by Sir Laurence Howard in 2013 the idea came following the disappointing news that Rutland was not successful in its bid to secure the Weeping Window which had started its life in 2014. I simply said; Well, in that case we will do it for ourselves!" and the project was born and taken up by Vicki Goddard, Judith Gilboy and a team of very enthusiastic helpers. I went with two members of the committee to see the early stages of poppy making at Catmos College and can only say how fantastic we felt about the project. I am thrilled with the success to date which I am very pleased to lend continued support but also to make a poppy which I will dedicate to Lieutenant Colonel Percy Evans Freke Leicestershire Yeomanry and all who fell with him on 13 May 1915 at the Battle of Frezenberg Ridge outside Ypres when the Leicestershire Yeomanry went into the line the previous day to come out the following day a broken regiment due to the very high casualties. The Leicestershire Yeomanry held the line on the day which prevented the Germans getting to the town of Ypres and also any chance of the English Channel. We are delighted to host a workshop here at my home which is where Lieutenant Colonel Evans Freke lived and from where he left in 1914 never to return.
