A Visit to: HC Hair Studio, Oakham

Hannah Coxhead Hair Studio has been located on Melton Road in Oakham since 2013 and has become one of Oakham's most popular hair salons, and we can totally see why.

Hannah Coxhead (28) launched HC Hair Studio 4 years ago and made her childhood dream of owning her own salon a reality. The salon itself is very unique with so much attention to detail from the tranquil decoration to the range of products and services available.

HC Hair Studio's look is different to the modern salons we're used to now, with a nod to the vintage eras, small rustic touches and shabby chic accessories that adds to the calming atmosphere. The lighting is also very clever, and not too bright or overpowering and really does allow you to relax.

HC Hair team; Colour technicians, Hannah and Rebecca, stylists Becki and Shia, training stylist Amara and Saturday Assistant Nancy - are all so friendly and welcoming. They are so happy to help you with any question you might have about a new hairstyle, recommending a colour or treatment to help care and repair for your hair. They all make the experience of the salon an enjoyable time you'll remember.

For me it's the small touches that make Hannah Coxhead Hair Studio unique. Like to drinks menu, where you can choose anything from Prosecco to coffee by local brand Two Chimps. Like their nail table where you can use their CND nail polishes while you have your hair cut or coloured. But the main reason HC Hair Studio stands out from the rest for me is the beautiful garden with a table and bench for you to enjoy while you visit the salon. The garden is kept in amazing condition with rustic and vintage features as seen in the salon itself featuring in the garden too.

Everything about visiting the girls at HC Hair is a real joy.

We asked the owner and senior colourist, Hannah Coxhead (28) a few questions about her, her business and about being in Rutland, and here is what she had to say:

HC Hair Studio will celebrate its 4 years as a salon in Oakham this summer, that is an incredible achievement! What is your favourite thing about your salon, HC Hair Studio?

The team, the clients, friendly atmosphere makes it a pleasure to come to work. We're completely individual.

Your boutique salon is really unique with a fabulous look to it. Has owning a hair salon always been a dream of yours? 

It has always been a dream to own my own salon but I never thought it would become a reality. I feel blessed.

You yourself are a trained colour technician. Each of your 6 employees are specialised in a different area. Please tell us about your staff and their unique area in the salon? 

I (Hannah) specialise in colouring hair. I am the studios senior colour technician. Rebecca Smith is also a colour technician and is very popular with the clients for her colouring skills. Becki is our senior stylist and specialises in cutting and occasion hair.

Both Rebecca and Becki have been with me since the Salon opened and I want to thank them for their loyalty.

Shia is trained in all aspects of hairdressing, however she mainly focus's on cutting and styling hair in the salon.

Amara is currently training with us and it won't be long until she is let loose with her own clients. She will be a stylist and next year wants to focus on her barbering and colouring skills.

Finally, Nancy is our Saturday assistant. She makes our life easier on our very busy Saturdays and makes us fantastic cakes that she brings to work for us to keep us going!

Rutland is a great place and we're very proud of it. What is the best thing about owning a business in Rutland?

I have grown up in Rutland and I love the area. We try and get as many things we need for the salon from local businesses in the area. For example our gorgeous Neom candles and hand wash we use in our salon to give our clients that extra special pampering treat.

I love that Oakham has lots of small boutique business's like ours and everyone is very friendly.

You don't just offer cuts and colour at HC Hair though do you? Please tell us what other services you offer.

We also over occasion Hair (Weddings, proms, hair ups for a special occasion, or even a glamorous blow-dry). We stock KeraStraight which is a gorgeous smoothing treatment that will last in the Hair for up to 4 months.

However, one of our favourite treatments which is a 'must-have' and very popular with our clients is Olaplex. Olaplex rebuilds the bonds in the Hair and prevents damaged making your hair look and feel gorgeous. It's great in particular for clients who colour their hair but anyone can use this treatment.

Your salon is so unique with amazing features and little touches that really make it stand out from the crowd. Please tell us more about what makes your salon different and a real gem to Oakham's high street. 

We're proud of our salon for many reasons, and love to welcome our clients with a warm friendly approach. We use Two chimps gorgeous coffee and a selection of loose teas from the brew tea company. We have a garden for you to relax in on those beautiful sunny days. We think your hair wash should be an experience and we get a lot of compliments for our relaxing head massages. We have a range of products from your luxurious treats to your everyday day essentials to ensure your locks always look fabulous!

HC Hair is in year 4 and has so many plans for the future. Tell us about your upcoming offers, product launches and what's coming in the future for HC Hair Studio?

I want to expand the business and team so we can offer you more opening days and times and late evening appointments too. As a team we're always looking to learn and develop our skills. We have a few courses this year so watch this space for new and exciting techniques coming to HC Hair Studio. L'Oréal #ColorfulHair direct dyes are the new craze in the salon at the moment, perfect for someone looking for a pop of vibrant colour this summer that quickly washes out and great for the festival season.

Over the past month, I've visited the salon myself to have a cut and blow-dry with HC Hair's latest recruit, Amara who is training as a hair stylist. My hair was in need of a cut and Amara did an amazing job and made me feel so welcome and I went home with a smile on my face, as well as an amazing hair cut.

Last week I actually visited the salon for a very special reason. Hannah and the team had just welcomed their latest product #ColorfulHair and I just had to try it out!

With a huge range of colourful options for you to choose from, these dyes last up-to 8 washes and are a fun way to change up your look for an occasion, or maybe for a festival trip this summer.

I chose 'Electric Purple' from the #ColorfulHair colour collection and had it added to my blonde ombre dip-dye of my bob for a fade-to-purple ends, and I love it! It's a really great way to play around with colour and with the convenience of it washing out after 8 washes.

I've had such a fun experience visiting Hannah and the team over the past month to gather photographs and information for this post, and it's clear that Oakham is very lucky to have HC Hair Studio and its talented staff. I cannot recommend HC Hair Studio more.
